Though VANÉS’s “i miss you, olivia 💔” is rather short, with a runtime of under three minutes, it elegantly paints a vivid depiction of the narrator’s relationship with Olivia. You get a real sense of the kind of intimate friendship-turned-romance the two shared, the heartbreak of their forced parting, and the way the narrator hopelessly tries to hold onto their bond despite all the distance between them. I thought the nuanced emotions of the song—fond reminiscence mixed with wistful regrets, resignation mixed with glimmers of hope—worked powerfully with its layered sound.
VANÉS has previously released other lesbian tunes, such as “Cherry Red” and “Girls”, though “i miss you, olivia 💔” seems to be a departure both musically and thematically. “i miss you, olivia 💔” is more up my alley than her previous, edgier work—I found it more developed—but I did find songs such as “My Body” pretty catchy, not to mention I think it’s great seeing VANÉS’s range! I’m looking forward to her next release!
