Lesbian Visibility Day special: Lesbian DJs
Happy (belated) Lesbian Visibility Day! Featuring lesbian DJs—including a Lesbian Tune of the Week reader!
Almost every week for the past year, I’ve been sharing “lesbian tunes” I enjoy that center relationships between women. But of course, lesbians can do anything, or make any kind of music. I personally love learning and hearing about lesbians in all walks of life, knowing we are out there and that, despite the practical difficulties that may be thrown our way by the imbalanced society we live in, we can be free to focus our lives whatever we please, the same as anybody else.
Often, people choose to make art visibly influenced by their circumstances, including by their sexual orientation; often, they choose to make art less obviously tied to themselves. There is a joy and freedom in both kinds of work, and though the former is the general focus of Lesbian Tune of the Week, for Lesbian Visibility Day, I wanted to celebrate the latter.
So on that note, here’s to lesbians making remixes and techno music that have nothing to do with lesbianism at all!
DJ Minx feat. Diviniti — MOVE
DJ Minx came out as a lesbian in 2021, and Pride Source followed up with her just last month. It goes to show how, although not for everyone, being out and “visible” can be a healing, transformative experience, even if it seemingly has little to do with your professional life. This was a great article that also talks about the importance of working to uplift other women. DJ Minx founded the collective of female DJs “Women on Wax.”
Tracy Young — Crave (Dangerous Remix)
Tracy Young actually also made a Grammy Award-winning “Pride remix” of Madonna’s “I Rise”! Like DJ Minx, Young makes a point of highlighting the difficulties women face in the music industry.
Barbara Butch — Hello 2024
Butch had an extensive, interesting interview with Attitude. She does also have a lesbian-themed song, “Muy Lesbienne.”
DJ Bekefi — Keep On Working
Nonchalant Magazine has a fun interview with DJ Bekefi; she also shares some advice for people that want to get into DJing.
the.last.zebra — Marrakesh
Last but definitely not least is Lesbian Tune of the Week reader, the.last.zebra!
Introducing the.last.zebra - a rising star in the DJ sky who began her musical journey in May 2023. Despite her relatively short time behind the decks, she has already made a name for herself with her electrifying mixes and unwavering passion for electronic music. She has already performed at several parties and events in Switzerland.
Each set tells a story, a personal reflection of her journey, her emotions and the vibrant culture of Zurich, which she calls home. She has just moved in with her girlfriend and is a proud member of the community.
The stories embedded in each set may reflect a spontaneous trip to North Africa or the beauty and diversity of the people she has met while travelling to beautiful places around the world. Some of her sets will bring you to the dance floor to experience the euphoria of her pulsating beats and infectious melodies, while others will put you in the mood to sit back with your loved one, stare at the stars and let the complex yet chill mixes take you on a journey that uplifts you and touches your soul.
She is also an artist, graphic designer and passionate educator who encourages creative expression in everyone she meets. As a proud Lesbian, she brings authenticity and inclusivity to her performances and makes everyone feel welcome and accepted with her smile. When asked about her name, she replies that her favourite T-shirt is striped and that she just loves these animals. Experience the electrifying vibes of the.last.zebra's mixes on her SoundCloud profile and immerse yourself in the dynamic journey created by a female artist.
Thank you so much the.last.zebra for writing in!
If any lesbian followers are interested in finding more lesbian artists, or “lesbian visibility” in general, I highly recommend subscribing to Lesbian Connection, a grassroots, print-based forum for lesbians worldwide. If you’re an artist yourself, you can also advertise your work there to some of the people most interested in celebrating and supporting lesbian art.
