Hollie Col — Two Step Plan
A short and sweet indie folk pop tune on loving a woman who's still dating a man—music video included!
Hollie Col’s new single and accompanying music video, “Two Step Plan”, follows the muddied waters the narrator navigates as she falls in mutual love with a partnered woman.
If you’re familiar Col already, “Two Step Plan” is very in line with her other releases. It’s catchy, features bright singing and thoughtful lyrics, and has what I’d call broad musical appeal. The execution of the video is great as usual; I love the imagery in it. The storyline is bittersweet, as you can imagine based on the general plot; I can imagine some readers not wanting to watch the narrator’s love interest’s scenes with her irritating boyfriend. (I have to admit I’m still not totally sure how to interpret the ending—I’d love to hear readers’ takes on it!)
For those only interested in the song itself, it begins 52 seconds into the video.
I adore Col for both her highly listenable, easy music, and her apparent commitment to making as many explicitly lesbian music videos as possible. She has an entire series of videos for her EP Julia Stevens. The titular Julia is a representation of all the women Col has had relationships with in the past; her experiences with these crushes, partners, and breakups have been condensed into the arc of a single relationship over the course of the EP. I love all the songs on Julia Stevens, but “Reruns” would have to be my favorite for its dreamy singing and compassionate lyrics!
My favorite article on Col so far is her interview with The AU Review. I also enjoyed Ticketmaster’s interview about her inspirations.
